Kalibaru Colonial Plantation and Ijen Sulphur Harvesting - 4 days

Start in the agricultural region of Kalibaru with acres full of, amongst others, coffee beans and cloves stretching out in the area. After spending two nights in Kalibaru, be brought to Ijen to find one of the most beautiful craters in the world. Get ready for a trip to the edge of the crater to overlook the surroundings and to see the magnificent crater lake with the bright yellow, from sulphur deposits, smoke coming out of the mountain. Watch miners climbing up and down the volcano with baskets filled with sulphur blocks over their shoulders.

Day 1:    Start in Kalibaru

Start in Kalibaru, where you will stay 2 nights in beautifully situated bungalows surrounded by coffee, cacao and rubber plantations.

Day 2:    Visiting Spice Garden and Village Walk

At Kalibaru you will make a pleasant walk through the coffee, clove, rubber and cacao plantations in the company of a local guide. Witness along the way how tempe and tofu are made by small home factories.

Day 3:    Transfer to Ijen

After breakfast, you will be picked up by our transport and you continue your trip in Ijen. You will stay in the area which is the ideal spot when visiting the beautiful region of the Ijen crater – one of the most beautiful craters in the world.

Day 4:    Ijen Crater tour, transfer to Bali

After an early wake-up call and breakfast, a four-wheel drive vehicle carries you through rural villages, coffee and clove plantations and then into one of Java’s last rainforests. Humidity, wildlife, giant ferns and big trees cover the slopes of the mountain. To arrive at the Park Ranger’s station to begin the 90 minute hike to Ijen Crater you walk along a shady track with spectacular views.
The stunning view that is unveiled at 2380 meters altitude will amaze you. The lake eerie color and the smoke wafting from bright yellow sulfur deposits create a desolate, barren and vibrantly alive landscape. Watching miners descend into the crater and re-emerge carrying up to 80 kilos of ore in bamboo baskets over their shoulders along the treacherous path.
After this climb you will get back on the car and be driven to the ferry that departs to Bali. You can choose to continue with another module.

We were astonished by the hard work the miners to in the Ijen crater! Truely remarkable. Furthermore, the tour was well organized and our guides were lovely.
