Ngorongoro Highland Trek - 3 nights

There is no better way to experience the beating heart of Tanzania than on foot. This three day Ngorongoro highland trek allows you to take in the beautiful vistas of Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru and beautiful Lake Natron. You need to be moderately fit to do this trek and it is a great way to meet the local people.

You will enjoy lunch at a local village and learn about the local Masaai way of life. Along the way you will pass boys herding their goats and cattle as well as encounter wildlife. This trek is all about taking in the view and slowing down to the laid back rhythm of African time.

Day 1:    Arusha to Olmoti Crater to Empakai (1L,1D)

It will be an early departure from Arusha to get to Olomoti. This is the departure point for your hike into the Empakai Crater. You will be accompanied on your hike by an armed ranger in case you should encounter any dangerous wildlife. The crater has no roads and no human habitation creating a truly wild paradise which contains forests and a crater lake which is home to flocks of flamingos. The caldera is 6km wide and the lake takes up about fifty percent of the crater floor.

As you walk you will catch glimpses of the lovely view and the wild animals. From the north eastern side of the crater you will look over the dramatic cone of Oldonyo Lengai, the Great Rift Valley and Lake Natron. From the eastern side of the caldera, you will admire the snow capped peak of Kilimanjaro. You will spend the night in a camp on the crater rim at Empakai.

Day 2:    Empakaai to the Great Rift Valley (1B, 1L, 1D)

Today, you will have to be up early at 07:00 hours in order to make the most of the cool weather and beautiful morning light for pictures of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru if the weather is not cloudy. After breakfast, at around 08:00 hours, you will set out for the day.

Donkeys will be used to carry the camping gear. You will walk from the Empakai Crater to the edge of the Rift Valley Escarpment where you will see the famous sweeping views over the Rift Valley towards the cone of the Lengai Volcano (known to the Maasai as Mountain of Godalley).

Stop off and have lunch at Naiyobi Village and visit a Massai Boma to experience the lifestyle of the Maasai people. After spending a few hours with the tribe, you will walk to the camp where you will spend the night.

Day 3:    Rift Valley to Lake Natron (1B, 1L)

This morning you will hike into the Great Rift Valley and to the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai Mountain. On the one side you will have the scenery of impressive cliffs and before you Lake Natron spreads out before the impressive Lengai volcano on the other side. At the base of Oldonyo Lengai you will be met by a driver and the vehicle will take you back to Arusha.
